Spring is here and it’s finally starting to feel warmer! This means it’s the perfect time to plant delicious treats ready for summer.
Learning about food and where it comes from is important for all children but is especially important for our picky eaters. Gardening is a fun activity that creates the perfect opportunity to talk and learn about food – without the pressure to eat. Getting the whole family involved – from choosing what and where to plant, planning the watering schedule and feeding the plant is a great way to facilitate positive food experiences.
The sense of responsibility that comes with looking after a plant, and the curiosity that naturally occurs from watching it grow, means children are more likely to try the food when it’s ready to eat. Try and plant a preferred food, alongside something your child hasn’t tried before.
Gardening is also a great sensory experience - touching the soil, separating plant roots, and watering the plants; all of these activities help to build your child’s tolerance of new sensory experiences – an important part of trying new foods!
Here at 2Bites, we have been busy planting strawberries! We can’t wait till they’re ready to enjoy.
